Chinese Rice Balls aka Fan Tuan 饭团

Tiffany's Experimental Kitchen introduce: Rice balls.

Dylan asked me what is "Fan Tuan" 饭团. If you know Chinese, most likely you might have heard of it. Dylan posted about oriental style sushi but from the way I see it looks more like the new design of Fan Tuan than Sushi.

"Fan Tuan" : is a traditional tit bit for Chinese. It is usually prepared for trips, picnics, outings or for workers far from eating places. Truthfully speaking I actually never see any around Malaysia yet. Thought they do have something similar.

This is the traditional Taiwanese Fan Tuan. With some meat fluff or meat or mushroom or vege or anything salty, spicy, sour inside. Then wrap around with the plastic wrapper. Super tasty. I love it a lot. Amye and Mark's Rice Balls 饭团, sticky gooey goodness! And the grains of glutinous rice were nice and chewy, al dente, not a big gooey mess.

This is the Japanese inspired Fan Tuan. The japanese are a batch of perfectionist. Even a simple meal also want to make it look as pretty a spossible. Thus this signature triangle shape.

    The country style fan tuan.

    The modern Chinese fan Tuan.

The fun Japan Unagi fan Tuan

Fried Fan Tuan with Soy Sauce. Can be bought in Jusco.

The common type of Fan Tuan in a lunch box prepared by Japanese Mums for their kids. Simple lunch box.

In my way of thinking this is a Asian Version of a meal on the go. Like a Cheese Burger for the westerners. So everyone now do you know what is a fan tuan? ^^~~
