Pan’s Labyrinth.
My good friend gave this video to me tonight. I have seen the promo of this movie, but I never really got to watch it. Blood & violence VS Beauty & enchantment. It is a great movie in a slow fairy tale mix with war movie way. Adult reality with child innocence. This movie is really mind blowing. Fantastic graphic with very creative character casting. Don’t expect much action impact or super funny stuff. The war scene is similar to those civil war movies. But the fairy tale part is great. Pan/ faun, little fairies, monster with eyes on the palms. And all of them eat MEAT!
The golden key, the ugly toad, the 3 doors, the mythic statues- the essence of fairy tales. Little girl Ofelia is a princess from the underworld that got lost in our human world. She lives among us, fall sick and die as mortal. Her vivid imagination and belief in fairy tales reminds me of myself. I was just like her. A little girl wearing dresses with bows in my hair and pretty shiny dolly shoes. I always play by myself, lost in my own imagination. A private world all of my own.
Talking about fairy tales…..
I have read the original works of ‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales’ before. A lot of it actually is not really suitable for children. It seems like the western society has always been very open about sex since 16-17th century. Or maybe earlier, I am not too sure. The modern day ‘Grimm’s we read are maybe 15th version or more. I don’t quite remember. The first few original versions are really nasty. For example, ‘Snow White’, originally the Queen (snow white’s mum) did not die. There is NO step mother. Basically the King is …a bit…pervert. He like young girls. When the Queen becomes a more mature woman he lost interest in her. Then as years go by when Snow white is 14 or so, he starts to notice her. Then use your naughty dirty sense and think. Yes, the father tricks the daughter to bed and had a great time. The Queen is a dilemma. The King always brings snow white to functions and leaves her all alone. She is jealous of snow white and feels the need to protect her daughter. She asks the guard to take snow white to a safe place. But snow white was young and think queen just jealous of her and she won’t listen. (yes, snow white is kind of ignorant, slutty and kind of bitchy in the original work.)
Anyway, the story reads more like porn then fairy tale. Everyone sleep with everyone. It also includes the prince that kisses snow white and makes her spit out her apple. The Prince is a sicko too.
He like dead bodies. If the girl is not dead he has no ‘feel’. Sick right??? When I was a kid I have always been wondering why the prince kiss snow white when she is dead and in a glass coffin. Very weird and now I finally got the answer. ( The Disney changed the scene a bit. ) The prince has always come by in the end out of no where, kiss snow white, apple out , live happily ever after. Ok, back to the original versions, the prince brought snow white back to his kingdom and have fun with her then somehow apple came out. She is alive again. The prince lost interest in snow white. He only like dead girls. He got a whole room full of such girls. Anyway, they still got married in the end. Snow white attracted the King to ensure she has a great pampered life. During their wedding she even invite her mum too. Snow white told the Prince ‘s Father that her mum was very cruel to her. And wish he can help her take revenge. So
Snow white made her mum wear a pair of red hot iron shoes. The Queen dance her ‘dance of death’ till she drop. In the original story, Snow white is this slutty, cruel, cold hearted sexy pretty girl. Very weird. So different from the familiar fairy tales we read since young. But actually you can find some holes here and there, or some mismatched bits in the story. It was due to multiple editing through all these centuries. If they cut some where out it will appear weird. Anyway, next time got chance I will tell you all more about ‘original fairy tales’ which shows the true human cruelty and nature. It is a sort of reflection for everyone.
Tiffany loving the song: ‘ happy ending’.
